In large part because of those 2 gotchas, the preferred way to set up a universal image, and as used with a Windows to Go drive, is to use DISM to *apply* an image from the. Another gotcha is that Win10 can continue to use some old drivers that it shouldn't - check Device Mgr. One gotcha is that some, usually OEM software that's installed can be incompatible with other hardware - possibly one reason Microsoft discontinued support for Windows to Go. So in theory any copy of Win10 will run on any Win10 compatible hardware. Usually this works, but there are devices with some one-off components where drivers are not in any Microsoft database. Win10 searches for any drivers missing on startup, and installs the ones it finds. It is a bit of a bind to have to take my server down to perform a full backup image of the system drive but it apears online backups just can't be relied upon. That succeded every time I've tried it AND I have used the offline backup to recover after chkdsk mangled the system drive after some driver fixing attempts corrupted the file system. So I created bootable media on the external 1TB hard drive and booted to that and had that create the system drive full backup using intelligent sector backup to avoid backing up empty space and unpartitioned space etc. In my case trying to image my Vista server laptop system HD plus recovery partion (this one I am using now) while using the program online to an external 1TB HD in a USB caddy it would always fail to generate a valid backup image, multiple times!
Just create bootable media within the program, that is portable.
